Opening a Bank Account in Turkey as a Foreigner

You do not need a residence permit to open a Turkish bank account — but most people assume you do, and pick the wrong bank because of it. Here is which banks actually work, what you need, and why applications get rejected.

You do not need a residence permit

This is the most common misconception. Several major Turkish banks will open a personal account for a foreigner on a tourist visa, using just a passport and a Turkish tax number. A residence permit makes some things easier later, but it is not a hard requirement at account opening for most banks.

That said, policies vary bank to bank and even branch to branch. Some state-owned banks are stricter than private ones. If one branch turns you away, try a different branch or a different bank before assuming you need a permit.

What you actually need

Your passport, your Turkish tax number (get this first — it is free and takes minutes), and a Turkish phone number and address help but are not always mandatory for a basic account. Some banks want a small minimum opening deposit, typically 100–500 TL equivalent.

Why applications actually get rejected
It is rarely about your nationality. The usual reasons are: no Turkish tax number yet, a passport with less than 6 months validity, or going to a branch that simply does not process foreign accounts often and defaults to saying no. Bring your tax number certificate and, if the first branch declines, try a busier branch in a central district.

After you have an account

A Turkish IBAN makes almost everything else faster — paying rent, utilities, phone contracts, and receiving local income all assume you have one. Set up the bank’s mobile app immediately; most day-to-day banking in Turkey happens there rather than in branch.
