Best Schools in Turkey for Expat Families 2026

International or Turkish state school — the choice shapes your budget, your kids’ daily life, and how fast you can actually move. Here is what it really costs and the enrollment deadline most families miss.

International vs Turkish state schools

Turkish state schools are free and teach entirely in Turkish, which works well if your kids are young or you are settling in long-term. Most expat families with school-age kids choose an international school instead, for the English (or bilingual) curriculum and the easier transition.

Istanbul has the widest choice — British, American, German and IB-curriculum schools all operate there. Antalya and Izmir have fewer international options, so check availability in your specific district before committing to a neighborhood.

What it actually costs

Annual tuition at international schools in Istanbul typically runs $8,000–20,000 per child depending on the school and grade level, plus a one-time enrollment fee that is often non-refundable. Turkish private (non-international) schools are usually cheaper, in the $3,000–8,000/year range. State school is free but budget for uniforms, books and transport regardless of which path you choose.

Enrollment deadlines are earlier than you think
The best international schools in Istanbul often close admissions for the following academic year by spring, sometimes with waitlists. If you are planning a move for the new school year, start applications 6–9 months ahead — not after you land.

What you need to enroll

Most schools ask for your child’s previous school records (translated and often notarized), passport copies, and proof of your residence permit application or approval. Some international schools also require an entrance assessment or interview, particularly for older grades — ask early so you are not scrambling to schedule it after arrival.
